After a few flight delays, Athena 18 Black made it to Las Vegas and ready for a weekend of volleyball. Day one started out pretty well against a big Utah Jrs team. We were a little sluggish and kept them within striking distance, but never fully woke up and lost in 2 sets. The next two matches of the day were rough and we never found our rhythm. We ended the day where we started in the pool, third. Day two saw a group of better rested and a much more energized team. We swept the all matches in 2 sets, finishing first in the pool. We had an outstanding hitting and serving performance from Tori Kemper, who lead the team in service aces and kills. Hannah Smargiassi followed close behind Tori in service aces. Despite, illness and injury, all four of our middles played and combined for an outstanding hitting percentage. Leading the charge were Sam Kemper and Hannah Smargiassi. Two players that lead the team in digs were Sydney Cook and Stephanie Meeuwsen. Day three started slow, but we managed to struggle by with a win in 3 sets against the Colorado Club, 970 Elite. We ended the day with a loss in 2 sets against a strong serving and defensively quick Newport Beach, CA team, South Bay. We ended the tournament improving our initial seeding by 30 places.
