Athena 14 Beta started off the weekend with a round-robin tournament on Saturday afternoon at Southridge High School. Opening the day with a nail bitter, they beat Warriors-1 with consistent service receive, by 3 points. Then they played Suncats, and with the help of great serving, defeated them by a score of 25-13. Then came the tough Club Ridge Team. With Athena’s inconsistent serving and service receive, Club Ridge took the game. The final opponent was Warriors-2, and Athena ended with the day on a positive note, beating them 25-10. Playing four games against four different teams, and ending the day with 3 wins and only 1 loss was a great way to start off their season!!
Athena then had their first qualifying tournament in Salem at Blanchet High School on Sunday. They got a slow start against a good PVC team, and lost the first match in 3 games. Next was Apollo, who they served tough and beat in just 2 games! Then it came down to Pacific, the last pool play match. It took Athena 3 games, but they won. PVC had lost to another team, so Athena ended pool play tied for FIRST PLACE!! In the first round of tournament play, Athena got matched up against Woodland. It was a really close match, trading points and leads, but in the end Woodland took the match. The final tournament round game was against Banks. The players were tired from the long day and lost the first set. With more consistent serving and team camaraderie, Athena won the second set. This put them into the third game, where great service receive and serving enabled Athena to win 15-8. The team came together, worked as a group, and played hard to get their final win. Coming into the tournament, Athena was ranked 96 and ended the day ranked 77, up 19 spots!! Overall, the weekend was a huge success and Athena 14 Beta will only improve as the season continues.
