14alpha black Regional’s Recap

A well challenged and beautifully travelled road. That is only part of what this 14alpha black team has accomplished. It’s been said that Regional’s are what every team has been practicing all year for. And while there is truth in that, there is also truth in seeing that Regional’s are where a team displays not only their talent, but what they are truly made of; what makes them a team any coach would be proud of.

I love so many things about the girls on this team, but what I love and appreciate the most, as a coach, is their tenacity and willingness in facing both adversity and challenge and not backing down. Regional’s highlighted all of this and more. I do not think there was a person, a team, a parent, who watched this team play and couldn’t see that not only were they on fire, but that they had a unity, a cohesiveness that is rare in a team so young.

While the first match of the day displayed a case of the nerves, the girls quickly bounced back to take Adrenaline in two sets. Sarah Lewis and Natalia Perry played fiercely at the net, pounding the quick sets and blocking the opposing team’s quick sets. Roof! Maddie Cenac jumped on both the right and left side without hesitation and put up a nice firm block on the outside.

The second match against The Blues was a perfect opportunity for 14alpha black to play wicked defense and smartly place into serving areas. Not only did Gabby Loth and Kate Huckey put up beautiful sets all day, they consistently served The Blues off the court!

Taking second in their pool, with awesome defense by Sammi VanEaton and Emily Strand, the girls were matched up against West Valley. A tough team both offensively and defensively, 14alpha black stepped up with all out defense from Natalie Greenburg and amazing ball control from Maty Pelo. While 14alpha black dropped the match, they came together like the family they have come to be with a new saying: You only live one (Yolo). They knew, and they told me, they would only have this moment, this time, with these girls, once. Their time was now.

Facing OJVA for the third time this season, the girls were unstoppable. Sarah Penner pounded balls down the line while Morgan Bolger hit seams all match long! Their enthusiasm was palpable and they were determined to fight until the end. And they did. Another solid win, they moved on to their last match of the day; against NW Reign.

It was clear that this team was going to go out leaving their mark while at the same time setting up next year’s team for success. Screaming their lungs out cheering, the girls tumbled into the middle of the court, hugging, winners again. Winners who finished the season ranked 19th! Well done ladies. I could not be more proud.

When we heard that our one day regionals was going to be at PSU, we were excited! What we didn’t know was that we would be there until 830pm!
The girls started out the morning doing really well! There were a few teams that we hadn’t seen and some were pretty good. For this tournament, we were out our Libero Abby Matsushima, so we needed to make some adjustments. Rachel Rhodes started as our setter for the first game. She was new to our team after a bit into the season and has done great becoming a better setter and working with our other setter, Gabby Quintana!
In pool play, the girls played really hard, served well, and came in 3rd in pool. We were less than 2 percentage points away from second place!
Madison Brady, our other libero, was a passing machine in the back row on Saturday. She picked up a ton of balls and helped to start out many of our plays. Taylor Dean, one of our outside hitters, warmed up and turned it on with some awesome back row attacks and serves. We entered into bracket play almost an hour late, but came out with a victory over a team we have seen many times. The girls really worked on their mental toughness this weekend having to play so late and having such long breaks in between games. They really had to work together to keep their energy and intensity up. We ended up going to the championship game (in our bracket) and played a pretty tough, consistent team. We went to 3 with them and lost 15-12 in the final. The girls played great this weekend though and should be very proud of their improvements throughout this season at Athena. Most of the girls were pretty consistent in all areas and did great on the court and helped with encouragement of their teammates. These girls are awesome to watch and coach, and Jen and I are sad to see the season coming to an end.

I wanted to give a thanks for the parents too. This was a very long day and they stayed and supported their girls. Thanks a ton!!

The second day of regionals started strong when the girls dominated their first match overwhelming their opponent with a barrage of blocks and flawless attacking. Our ball control, blocking and serving prowess were on display in every match as we passed no lower than a 2.1, averaged 3+ blocks per set and served exactly where we needed them to serve. Their drive to win, unselfishness, positive energy, and work ethic made everyone fun to watch and was the key to our success. All-in-all it was a hugely successful and fun weekend!

Nike Junior Beach

Nike Junior Beach is a new beach volleyball program founded by Wendy Stammer and Chris Terjeson for kids 7th grade and up for the upcoming 2012/2013 school year. We are offering beach volleyball training to players that want to learn how to play beach doubles and quads in May/June, July and August. Our training sessions will include technical training for all skills, drills that incorporate these skills, conditioning and jump training in the sand, learning the strategy of the game, learning the rules of the outdoor game and, of course, game play. Beach volleyball can help you with your indoor game as well. It can help you move faster, jump higher, increase your court awareness not to mention the incredible shape you will be in.

Nike Junior Beach is for players of different goals: those who want to play tournaments in doubles or quads all summer; those who want to just play the Seaside Beach tournament in August; those who don’t want to play any beach tournaments at all but just want to be in great shape. You don’t have to sign up with a partner or have a group of four to be a part of our beach sessions. But, if you do sign up with a partner or group, we will make sure that you are competing with that person or group when we put you into game play. And… you don’t have to try out for Nike Junior Beach. It is on a first come first serve bases with registration. You can register for one session or all sessions. We want it to work with your summer plans. All training sessions will be held at the beautiful sand courts on the Nike Campus in Beaverton.

Nike Junior Beach will be run by veterans Wendy Stammer and Chris Terjeson. Both Wendy and Chris have years of experience playing and coaching indoor and beach volleyball. Wendy, an LSU All-American, played professional indoor and beach volleyball for 18 years including indoor in Italy, Germany and the US and beach fours and doubles tours from 1994 through 2005 in the US, China and Brazil. Her most recent tour was on the AVP Beach tour. She has also competed for 14 years at the Seaside beach tournament winning eight of those 14 Women’s ”Open” events there. Chris Terjeson is an All-Conference setter from the University of Wyoming and will be inducted into the Wyoming Hall of Fame this summer. She had a stint with the National team in 1990 and also played indoor professionally in Belgium in 1992. Chris is also a two time Seaside Beach Champion in Co-ed “Open” Beach doubles with her husband, Brian. Wendy and Chris still both compete in beach doubles locally.

What a great way to end the season! Athena’s 12beta team entered regionals as the #2 team in our pool in the Bronze/Diamond division. The team had a great week of practice leading up to the tournament and we had a feeling that we would have a good tournament.

During pool play, we beat a familiar opponent, Trails End, in our first match. Our next match was against a good Webfoot team. Our girls played well and won that match as well. Our last game in pool play was against the #1 seed OJVA team. We played them very tough but lost in the end 23-25, 24-26. Our pool play results were good enough to get the #2 position in our pool and a place in the Bronze bracket.

In our crossover match, we played a solid Clark County team. Unfortunately, we didn’t play our best and lost in two games. Our next match was against another Trails End team. We bounced back from our previous loss to play well enough to beat Trails End. Our last match of the day was a grudge match against OJVA (from pool play). Despite the fact that it was toward the end of the day and our girls were tired, we played our best match of the season. We ended up beating OJs by a decent margin thanks to everyone playing hard, hitting the floor, getting kills….and making serves. Coach Abby told the girls that if we didn’t miss a serve during a game, she would buy us all ice cream. It took us all season to do it, but in this last fantastic game, we made every serve and won the match!

It was a fantastic tournament for Athena’s 12 beta team. We played our best volleyball at the end of the season and ended regionals with our highest CEVA ranking. Way to go Athena 12 Beta!
