Goddess
of the Week
ATHENA
is the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Battle. The reason we originally
chose "Athena" is
because "battle" represents our competition, but unlike "war", "battle" is
strategic. The "wisdom" portion is self explanatory. We
want to provide a well-rounded environment for our athletes teaching
them not only the technical and team skills to be successful at volleyball,
but be good role models for responsibility, integrity, and work ethic.
Each week all coaches nominate one of the girls from their team based
on
their performance in many
areas. We have had girls awarded because of their play,
their attitude, and their
ability
to
encourage
teammates.
One player will be selected from the 12s & 14s and
one player from the 16s & 18s.

12
alpha: Haley Howarth - Haley is a second year
starter on the 12 Alpha team. Haley has proven to be one of
the best players in the 12's division. She is one
of our strongest hitters and setters and really can play
any position that we ask of her. Haley is also a
great leader on the court. She communicates to her
teammates very well and always plays hard. It will
be fun to watch Haley grow as a player over the years. Congrats,
Haley!!
16
beta: Kylee Rosette - Kylee is an amazing all
around volleyball player. She continues to lead the team
for the
season in blocks, kills and holds the highest passing average.
She is the definition of coachable and is eager to
learn more about the game of volleyball. Throughout the
year
Kylee was asked to play at a higher level of competition
with our 17’s Alpha team and stepped up to the
challenge! She is great and we are so lucky to have
her!

| 4/5/10 |
14
beta: Amy Sohlberg - Amy has been a consistent
leader all season for the 14 beta team as an all-around
player. In March, Amy played with the 14 alpha team in a
16U tournament. Without even practicing with the team, she
stepped into the middle blocker position and did a great
job. Amy was 2nd in kills, 2nd in blocks, 2nd in digs, and
4th in aces. We couldn't have had such a successful day
without her.

alpha: Devyani Gupta -

12
alpha: Lexy Thompson - This is Lexy Thompson's
4th year as an Athena player. Lexy started at Athena
as a 4th grader, playing 12's for three years. She
is now on our 13 Alpha team and proving to be one of our
most well rounded players. Lexy is an outside hitter
for our team, one of our strongest and most consistent servers
and is she doesn't stop there. She is also one of
our best back row players both in passing and defense. Lexy
loves volleyball and is also a strong softball player who
balances both spots at this time of the year. She
will be a force to contend with in her future years as a
volleyball player. Great Job, Lexy!!

alpha: Hailey Miller -

14
alpha: Beth Fanger - Beth is AMAZING!!! She just
started playing volleyball this season. Beth started out
as our libero but this last Power League, we moved her to
our outside hitter (only practicing in that position the
Thursday before the tourney) and she rocked! She has great
ball control and ended the day with the 2nd most kills,
the best hitting efficiency, 2nd in digs, and the best serve
receive. Beth works hard each and every practice.
16
alpha: Sydney Saunders - She had an attack %
of .375, a kill % of .542 and passed a 2.00 with 58% of
her passes 3 option.
|
| 3/8/10 |
12
beta: Cameron Kays - She ran to team as a setter
in our 4-2 and worked tremendously hard in the last tournament.
17
alpha: Jade Beavers
|
| 3/1/10 |
12
alpha: Emily Strand - This is Emily's first season
with Athena. She is one the most focused players on
our 12 Alpha team and comes to practice every day ready
to learn. Emily has improved leaps and bounds since
our first practice because of her incredible work ethic. She
always has a smile on her face and you can see her excitement
when she wins a point for her team. She is the perfect
example of a "team player" always cheering for
her teammates on the court in a game and in practice. Emily,
it is a pleasure to coach you! Great job!

| 2/22/10 |
14
alpha: Lucy Stevens - Lucy was UNSTOPPABLE in our
Power League this weekend. She has been working hard in
practice on timing for hitting. She played all-around for
us all day. Lucy absolutely dominated our crossover match
against a tall Salem 14 Black team putting us in the finals
for the Bronze division. She led the team offensively with
41 kills (of 56 attempts) and a 0.482 hitting %! WOW! She
also had 26 digs and 6 blocks. She took some big steps toward
her potential this weekend. To top it all off, she has a
TERRIFIC attitude and is always smiling on the court.
16
alpha:
Lara Thomas - Lara has been a dedicated Athena
member for 3 years. Lara rarely misses practices and
is encouraging to her teammates. At our last power
league tournament Lara held our team as the only one who
played well throughout the day both front and back row. She
passed well, dug balls on defense, and was our leading offensive
player.
|
| 2/15/10 |
13
alpha: Alex Kaplan - This is Alexa's third year
at Athena, two of which she played as a setter at the 12's
level. At the President's Day Classic, we decided
to try Alexa as our libero. She became a new player
in her new position. She talks more, she smiles more, she
is so aggressive on defense and she is one of our best passers. She
loves her new role on the team and thanks us almost every
day for moving her to the libero position. Great job
Alexa.
16
beta: Makayla Reed -
|
| 2/8/10 |
12
beta: Cara McClean - She had great focus and really
gave it 100% yesterday at practice. She’s always
been really athletic, but yesterday she was listening really
well and running the crossing pattern out of the back row
very well. She didn’t let very many balls drop.
15
beta: Haley Shaw - Haley had an awesome weekend.
She had a great attitude throughout the entire day, playing
different positions encouraging her teammates. Giving
100 percent effort no matter the score, also during practice
this week she hustled through every drill taking directions
really well.

| 2/1/10 |
15
alpha: Claire Bange - Claire was my nomination
from our last tourney because of her outstanding leadership
and high kill percentage. Lately in practice, she's been
working hard to focus on the smallest details of her fundamentals
and is setting a great example for her teammates.
17
alpha: Kenzie Van DeWege - Kenzie has been an
exceptional role model and leader on the court. I never
have to ask her to hustle to a ball or to shag a ball.
She's been a true inspirational motivator during drills
at practice and while doing AJ Training. I can always
count on Kenzie being the most vocal player on the court
and on the bench. It's for these reasons that her teammates
benefit from her enthusiasm for the game and it makes
them all better.
|
| 1/25/10 |
14
beta: Wallis Mariucci - We
put Wallis into the setter position without much warning
or preparation. She has done
nothing but work diligently and consistantly to better herself.
She has become a 5-1 setter, which we never really had much
time to go over, and she takes it in stride. She
played every minute of every game at this Sunday's PLQ and
never once complained...but instead, took feedback and made
the changes!
18
alpha: Meg Williams - Meg
Williams has committed to her college of choice, Academy
of Art University Urban Knights. Meg
has a great attitude and a strong work ethic that has allowed
her to reach this goal of hers.
|
| 1/11/10 |
12
alpha: Cassie Erickson - Cassie
is one of my main setters and she did a terrific job running
a 6-2 for me this weekend. ( As if she had
done it for years!!!) She was positive and energetic the entire
day and helped other players through their confusion of a 6-2
offense. A true quarterback on the court. Not easy
to do for a 12 year old. She is definitely one of the main
leaders on the team and is also one of my best servers, hitters
and defenders. She led our team to a tie for first in our
tournament. –Wendy
16
alpha: Kelsie Christensen - Kelsie was one of the major contributors to the success
we had this weekend. Kelsie played every minute of every match.
She
gave everything she had throughout the day and was about to
fall over after the last match was over. Kelsie hit .254,
passed a 2.1 , and served 12 aces. She was a nut! –Lena
|
| 1/4/10 |
14
alpha: Erin Bonzer - Erin led the team in hitting
(14 kills), was 3rd in serve receive (1.52), and 3rd on defense.
She has
a great attitude and is very coachable. Erin always has
a smile on her face. – Brooke and Emily
16 beta:
Lexi Cadonau - Lexi
set a 5-1 for our first tournament leading 16’s Beta
to a second place finish. Lexi adjusted to multiple lineups
and
supported her team every point of the game. She showed consistency
throughout a LONG day of volleyball. She is coachable and
shows enthusiasm to learn more about the game. Thanks Lexi! – Krystal
and Kynsi
