Club Tryouts

Welcome to the Club Tryout page.  We are excited that you are interested in becoming part of our Athena/Ajax family.  There are many things that make our club a unique experience for your player.  If you would like to learn more about what makes Athena special, please visit our Why Athena page.



We all share in the eager anticipation of a 2020-2021 club season, and we are making plans to get this season off the ground. It’s been a unique and fluid situation and we have had to adapt with the latest health and safety updates to keep our ATHENA/AJAXVB family as healthy as possible. With the latest announcement by Governor Brown, we may be unable to hold these tryouts, but will instead offer spots to players so that we can start training with their teams as soon as we can get back into the gym. Team coaches, practice times, tournament schedules, and team dues are all now posted on our website and we are excited to get team practices off the ground at beginning of January.


  • If we are allowed to have tryouts, they will be held on Dec. 5th and 12th according to the times posted on our website. In this case, we will offer players spots on specific teams at the conclusion of the in-person tryout.

  • If, however, we are not allowed to have tryouts, the process below is what we will do in lieu of a traditionally in-person tryout, so we can plan and manage expectations. In this scenario, we will be offering a spot in the club and later will determine which team each player will be placed on.


STEP 1: All players intending to accept a spot at ATHENA/AJAXVB for the 2020-21 Season needs to have completed the online tryout registration process by the following dates:

  • 15s, 16s, 17s, 18s girls, and all AJAX boys by Tuesday, Dec. 1st  

  • 11s, 12s, 13s, and 14s girls by Tuesday, Dec. 8th


STEP 2: Coaches will meet between Dec. 2nd-4th for the older girls and AJAX boys teams, and Dec. 9th-11th for the younger girls teams, to determine which players we will be extending invitations to at each age level.  We have the ability to add teams this season but need everyone to register by Dec. 1st/8th so that we can make the necessary arrangements to accommodate as many players that would like a spot as possible.

(For example: We currently have three 13s teams (13 Gold, 13 Black, 13 Silver).  That means we can offer up to 36 spots for players in the 13 division. If we have 48 players in the 13s division register for tryouts, we have the ability to add a 13 White team but need to know this by Dec. 1st/8th.)


As there will not be the traditional in-person tryouts, invites are decided upon by past ATHENA/AJAX experience, current performance in our camps and clinics, as well as any other knowledge or experience with the player.


STEP 3: ATHENA/AJAXVB will send out invitations to players by Friday, Dec. 4th for Ajax boys and Athena 15-18, and Friday, Dec. 11th for the Athena 11-14 teams - so that families can discuss if they would like to accept the invitation to be a part of ATHENA/AJAXVB this season.  Please note that these invitations will be invites to be a part of the club, not a specific team. 


STEP 4: Players will accept the invitation by paying the deposit amount by clicking on the Groundwork link included in the invite email on your respective tryout date of Dec. 5th or 12th.  This deposit is non-refundable as it is taking a spot from another player that may have wanted this position.  If spots are not accepted by 5pm on Dec. 5th/12th those spots will be offered to another player on the waiting list.


STEP 5: Once we are allowed to get back in the gym we will have an opportunity to work with the players which will allow us to determine the appropriate team placement for each player.


INFO ON DUES: Each player will pay a deposit to accept a position within ATHENA/AJAXVB.  Club dues will be figured and divided up into equal payments over the duration of the season so that families can budget.  Each team’s dues are calculated on the projected practice schedule and tournament schedule.  If we are unable to hold/attend some of the projected events due to a Governmental guidance, families will receive a refund for those events.  If a player/team is unable to attend a scheduled event due to exposure to COVID, injury, or other sickness, no refund or reduction of club dues will occur.

As a club director I am acknowledging a level of trust between our club members and myself to plan the season with the best intention of allowing our kids to play.  I am trusting our members to pay the amount due to plan and hold these events as well as our members are trusting me to reduce fees according to what actually takes place between December, 2020 and June, 2021.



Strict protocol will be in place to address the COVID-19 pandemic concerns and state requirements.

  • Players will have their temperature checked prior to entry to the building.

  • Players must bring their own face covering and wear it throughout the tryout process.

  • We suggest players bring a backup face covering in case theirs breaks.

  • We will have a small supply of face coverings as a backup as well.

  • Balls and equipment will be cleaned/disinfected between groups.

  • Players will proceed through tryouts in groups in order to limit interactions.

  • Parents will not be permitted inside the building during tryouts.

  • Additional countermeasures as needed and appropriate.

Complete these steps prior to starting the tryout registration process:

  • Renew your player's USAV membership.

  • Have your player's USAV membership expiration date available.  Membership must be valid through at least 12/31/2020.  Membership can be upgraded to full season after making a team.

  • Save an electronic copy of both sides of your player's medical insurance card for upload.

Payment will be made at the end of the registration via our secure payment system GroundWork.  Please have your Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or ACH Bank Account information available.

Registration Links:


1) Players will be informed which time they will need to report to the gym on the first day at least three days before the first day of tryouts.  Players will be informed two hours after the first session of tryouts what time they need to be in the gym on the second day.

2) Players will need to have completed all tryout registration information online before they arrive at the gym.

3) At the end of the second tryout session players will be informed which team they have been offered a spot on verbally and parents will receive an email through our payment/registration program.

4) Apparel will be ordered through an online process.

5) Our all-club informational meeting information will be posted on a video that each family will be able to log on and watch this year instead of an in-person meeting.
